Mary and Josh

Mary and Josh are from Valdosta, but they are currently living in NYC.  I am excited about photographing their wedding later this summer at Lovely Lane Chapel at Epworth by the Sea.  Not only is it a beautiful place, but I worked at Epworth in high school and college so I am especially fond of it.

Mary and Josh enjoy visiting museums - so the closest thing I could think of to do with them while they were in town was visit the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts.  Because we were meeting early in the morning, I decided to take a little something for them to eat in the beautiful courtyard.

As I was driving to meet them it started raining.  Fortunately there was a little dry spot in the courtyard that was just right for a little picnic.

I really wanted to come up with something fabulous to make since Mary is a chef.  But...I eventually decided to just keep it simple (a.k.a. remembered that I am not a fabulous chef).  I did squeeze some fresh orange juice for them since I knew it was one of their favorite drinks.

Mary and Josh had mentioned that they are a little shy in front of the camera...which I thought turned out cute in the photos...

I usually have the couple move around a lot to make them less nervous, but we were rather restricted with the rain.  But they looked great despite our cramped shooting space...

I caught this candid shot of Mary and Josh checking out Mary's ring.

Well...

Not really.

Josh is cleaning his glasses here, but I like their expression!  lol

Next we headed indoors to see the Spring Into Art exhibit.

I really like this one...

More looking around...

I would kill for Mary's flawless complexion.
Aren't these two cute?

A little more looking around...

...and then we headed outside for a few more photos.

And look...once camera shy...now they are pros!  :D

Mary and Josh - I'm so glad we were able to meet up while you were in town.  I can't wait for your wedding on St. Simons!

Happy and Laurin: Part 2
Tuesday, May 27, 2008 | Weddings

In my last post - Happy and Laurin's wedding - I somehow forgot to post the photos that were taken of the two of them on the beach together after their ceremony.  So without further ado, here they are...

I think Happy and Laurin had been going out to the beach once a week for months to practice this pose.  They were going for a high fashion, mod look.  (hahaha)

Now, if you missed their wedding post, go check it out now!  :)

SEE THE WEBSHOW: HAPPY AND LAURIN'S SLIDESHOW
SEE ALL THE IMAGES AND PURCHASE PRINTS: PICTAGE LAB

I first met Happy and Laurin at their "get to know you" session a few months ago.  I knew right away that their wedding day would be lots of fun.

When I arrived at the beach house, Happy was upstairs getting ready.  This is the view from June's eyes...

Who is June?  June is their dog - and she was hanging out below supervising the makeup application!

The simplicity of Happy's dress was perfect for the laid back, outdoor wedding on the lawn.  I decided to get a dress shot that would also show off the location that her dress was so well-suited for.

I love how the colors of the table matched the colors in the dress shot, so I had to use it for the rings...

Happy's "something blue" was her perfume which came in a beautiful blue bottle...

Happy...

Meanwhile, Laurin was downstairs hanging out with Happy's brothers...

Laurin with his mom...

The wedding was on the lawn, just up from the beach.  Only family members were present for the ceremony..

I love this shot of Happy hugging one of her brother's while the other looks on with a smile.  You can see why family is so important to Happy and Laurin.

Then everone went inside for a toast.  Ryan (cute, little guy in the center) was excited to have a glass of bubbly too so that he could join in the celebration.  (Of course his was non-alcoholic.)  Happy has the most handsome nephews.

After signing the marriage license, everyone headed to Gold Bug Island to where Happy and Laurin's friends were waiting and ready to celebrate with them.  They had a fun cupcake stand...

Boys will be boys.  Outside, the guys were skipping rocks.  :)
I think the Ben Sawyer Bridge (in the background) was voted the safest bridge in the nation.  (ha)

The setting was beautiful, and the sunset was spectacular.

Everyone was soon dancing to the great music of Spungworthi...

One of the singers even came out to dance with Happy...

The first dance...and you'll have to listen to the 2nd song on the slideshow to find out what their first dance song was.  I am willing to bet you have never heard it used before!  So funny!

Everyone had a great time...

I thought the favors were so cute and perfectly southern.  I'm only upset that I forgot to grab a bag.  I LOVE boiled peanuts!

Thanks Happy and Laurin - your wedding was lots of fun!

Jaime and Billy's Two Year Anniversary Sesssion: Folly Beach
Saturday, May 24, 2008 | Anniversaries

Two years ago Jaime and Billy were married at an intimate ceremony with close family and friends at Waterfront Park in Charleston.

A few weeks ago, I was so excited as I received an email from Billy saying that he wanted to surprise Jaime with a session for their anniversary.  As fate would have it, we would both be in Charleston on their exact anniversary weekend.  Jaime and Billy are awesome, so I knew that it would be a fun session.

This is an image from Jaime and Billy's weddding in May of 2006 that I pulled from my old blog - it was definitely a big hit.  Jaime and Lily...

So anyway...we decided to meet at the park at the end of Folly Beach.  Because I had two weddings in Charleston that weekend, the only time I could meet them was in the morning.  There was not a cloud in the sky and the sun was harsh (typically very bad for photos), but I was confident that Jaime and Billy could pull it off.  And they did!

To get to the beach, you have to walk down a road for 1/4 of a mile.  Along the way we passed this abandoned foundation with Mr. T grafitti and couldn't resist a quick shot.  So funny!

There are so many interesting things at this beach - twisted trees...

Another abandoned structure...

And of course, beach shots!

This is one of my favorites...

Can Jaime work it or what?

Is Billy a fabulous husband to surprise his wife with this or what?

Going...  Going...

Gone...

Another favorite of mine...

You have to love this one!

It was great seeing you again Jaime and Billy - and the session was so much fun!  Happy 2nd Anniversary!

p.s. Hi Joyce!

Should the bride and groom see each other before the ceremony?
Friday, May 23, 2008 | For Photographers

It has been a while since I answered a photography related question, so I thought it was about time to answer another one.

Amy posted the following question:

"In one of your posts you mentioned that nearly all of your brides and grooms are willing to see each other before the ceremony. My couples (all pretty Southern and traditional!) rarely want to do this, even though the resulting images are so powerful. How do you convince them to defy tradition?"

Great question Amy!

I found this information on how the tradition came to be:

"In Medieval times, a bride and groom were not even allowed to meet each other until the actual wedding ceremony. This was so neither one could back out if, when they saw the person, they would not want to be married to them! This ancient custom has carried forth to the present where now people feel it is bad luck to see each other before the ceremony. In fact, there is no basis to the success or longevity of a marriage if the bride and groom wait to see each other until the ceremony."

Seeing is believing.  Most of my clients have seen proof that seeing each other beforehand is better by viewing images on my website or blog that show just how special the time before the ceremony can be. You are right – the images are powerful, and they definitely speak for themselves.  In addition, my clients tell me that they know that I have been to hundreds of weddings, and they trust me to do what is best for them.

To illustrate, Matt and Andrea chose to see each other in the lush, intimate setting of a nearby park:

Pros of seeing each other before:

The air is filled with an electric anticipation of the day’s events to come.

This moment is likely to be the last opportunity until the evening is over for private, romantic time alone.

Seeing each other for the first time before the ceremony is sweeter because it is private rather than “on a stage.”

Clients are usually more comfortable showing their feelings in private.  Plus - they can actually talk to each other, hug, laugh, or whatever feels right!

The flowers, hair, make-up and clothes are all new and fresh.  This can be particularly important on a hot and/or humid day.

It reduces stress when the couple sees each other before the ceremony.

Cons of waiting until after the ceremony:

People hug, People cry. Mascara runs, lipstick smears, and flowers wilt.

The bride and groom are usually thinking about getting to the reception and joining their friends and family.

Standing at the altar in front of lots of people - how can the groom be himself?

Stage fright is rampant, formality is generally the rule.

The groom can't kiss the bride or tell her how beautiful she is.

Tips to make the time sweeter:

The point of seeing each other beforehand is to allow the couple some quiet private time together.  Choose a location that will allow a certain degree of privacy.  Ask friends and family to respect the time that the couple will share together by staying away for this short time – it is much harder for the couple to be themselves if people are gawking.  I usually ask a bridesmaid to “stand guard” close by to keep others away.  :)  Use a long lens and stay back in the distance until the couple is ready to do something different.

And that is about it.  I hope this helps.  I have never had a couple tell me that they regret seeing each other before (in fact they tell me the opposite) but I have had couples tell me they regret not seeing each other before.

If you have any photography related questions that you would like answered, feel free to post them below or email me.  I will answer them on a future post.

Lindsi: Great post Jill!   I need to make a post like this on my blog! (05/23/08, 03:53)
Jill Higgins: Hey Tami!  I can´t wait to see more of your photos - they rock!  And hi Trisha, Mary beth, and Amy - feel free to link! (05/23/08, 02:47)
Amy in SC: Thanks Jill for answering my question! I guess it just boils down to having a set of images that prove the point for couples to see, right? Like you said, my few couples who´ve been willing to see each other in advance have been SO glad they did; I suppose I´ll create a slideshow or something with these images to show hesitant couples. And maybe link to your post. :-) Thanks! (05/23/08, 02:47)
mary beth tyson: Great post Jill!  I love it when they see each other before and I´ve never had anyone sorry they did.  It´s such an amazing time especially when you make it special.  I may link to this post!  Great one! (05/23/08, 11:30)
Trisha: I´m a "blog stalker" of yours, and I just want to say that I LOVE this post.  It is so imformative. When my husband and I got married in 2005, we were told about this option, and I was VERY leery about doing this.  We ended up meeting before-hand and it was the BEST decision that we made about the whole day!! I might have to post something about this in my blog and direct people here to check out this whole entry! Thank you!!!  :) (05/23/08, 10:00)
Tami Bollerman: We saw each other before the ceremony and it was the most amazing thing. Our phtoographer captured unbelieveable pictures that we would otherwise never be able to have. They are already some of our most treasured moments -- captured! (05/23/08, 09:41)
